When I was 19, I was told pregnancy would likely kill me.

I didn’t want kids. I had never wanted kids. I certainly didn’t want to die.
So I asked for my tubes to be died and was told no.
They told me abortion would be my best option IF I became pregnant. 🧵

Thankfully I live somewhere that gives me full reproductive rights and healthcare.

Thankfully there’s no draconian abortion bans to put my life at risk.
But I was still denied autonomy over my body, just because I’m a woman.
I was told to use birth control. When I had bad reactions to it, I was told I should practice abstinence.

I was having gynaecological surgery anyways for severe endometriosis, there was no increased risk for a tubal ligation.
I was denied for one reason and one reason only… “you might meet a man who wants kids someday”

This is how we’re treated in healthcare settings.
As an afterthought. Second to the men and hypothetical babies in our future.
It’s also why abortion bans are deadly
Misogyny in medicine is so extreme that we aren’t trusted to make the best decisions for our bodies.

We aren’t trusted to control our reproductive destiny.
Yet we ARE entrusted with bringing life into the world.
It makes no sense.
It’s because it’s not really about life, it’s about control.

And when abortion bans are strict, women die.
Had I become pregnant in a state with a strict abortion ban, it would cost me my life.
“But there’s exceptions for the health of the mother!”
— Kelly (@broadwaybabyto) July 16, 2025
Sure, in theory there are.
But we don’t live in theory, we live in reality.
We live in a world that denies women tubals and hysterectomies because of what a future man MIGHT want.
When abortion is criminalized, doctors risk jail time for ending a pregnancy.

If you think every doctor will put the life of their patient above their own freedom, you’re kidding yourself.
If you think the life of the mother comes before a man and a fetus, you’re kidding yourself.
— Kelly (@broadwaybabyto) July 16, 2025
If you think women won’t be prosecuted for miscarriages, you’re kidding yourself.
If you think that misogyny isn’t driving these decisions, you’re kidding yourself.
If you want to be pro-life, you have to support reproductive rights.
— Kelly (@broadwaybabyto) July 16, 2025
You have to let us control our own bodies.
You have to admit that the government has no business determining who should or shouldn’t remain pregnant.
